The open road beckons for the throng of summer caravanners. What could be better than joining them?
Even though I spend most of my time working on a sitcom called Top Gear, I still like to think of myself as a motoring writer. And, as a motoring writer, at this time of year I am almost contractually obliged to address the thorny subject of the caravan menace.
It’s the summer hols, apparently, and so the roads of Scotland, Exmoor, Cornwall and the Fens must be clogged with caravans bearing hypothetical “50″ stickers and oxymoronic names like “Swift Deluxe”. Caravans are the mothers-in-law of motoring journalism, so take my caravan. Please. And so on.
I, however, have decided to defy the Hippocratic oath of my profession and attempt to stick up for these people - with their translucent kitchenware, blow-away garden furniture and swingball sets - and for several important reasons.

On the main atrium, between the jacket spud shop and the toilets, you’ll find the Top Gear stand at the British Motor Show, and it’s well worth a visit.
There’s loads of good TG merchandise on offer - T-shirts, CDs, keyrings, magazines and the like - and also some things that you can’t buy. Namely the Top Gear police cars.
You’ll see Jeremy’s Italian job, James’ proper copper wagon and Richard’s, erm, Sunset Beach cruiser.
So when you go down, drop in. And if you don’t know what to do for lunch, get a nice hot jacket potato, take a seat and watch some Top Gear.
You can’t get much more British than that.

I realise that this is going to make me sound like a bit of a mardy pants, but there’s no denying it any longer, so here goes.
I know working on Top Gear is an enormous privilege. Since you’re reading this car magazine, you would probably be interested in driving the Bugatti Veyron around VW’s closed test circuit at Wolfsburg. I have, and, frankly, it’s great.
As was the Maserati Quattroporte round the old Targa Florio route in Sicily. That was brilliant, and I’m grateful to have done it. When I was given a Fezza F430 Spider to take all around Europe, I was acutely aware that it was just one of a number of great driving experiences that wouldn’t have come my way if I’d stuck to my original career aspirations in estate agency and personal finance.
